Beyond Birth

Rohan, a software engineer, has returned today to his native Ranikhet, after three years.

The village where he used to stay has changed so much, it has become so green and lively. There was so much love in the environment, when he was nearing his own home where he saw Chiku peeping from the window.

Rohan smiled as he knew, now Chiku will take the ownership of informing his arrival to his Amma.

Chiku was their pet squirrel.

The door of their house was slight open. As Rohan pushed and went inside, he saw his Amma sitting on a rocking chair near the hall -room’s window, taking the sun rays on her face, oblivious of the fact that Rohan has arrived. She looked at Rohan. “Yes, who are you?” She exclaimed.

Rohan’s feet got stuck on the ground for the very moment. He saw small Chiku was standing on the dining table holding a walnut with both his hands, and staring empathetically at Rohan.

Rohan said- ‘Amma , it’s me Rohan!’

To which Amma said- ‘Am sorry beta, I don’t know you.’

Rohan’s world was falling apart. He ran and came outside, sobbing inconsolably. Rani, his childhood friend was passing by. She came towards him, and informed, “Aunty has started forgetting things and incidents from the past one year. We have consulted many doctors; she is showing early signs of Alzheimer.”

Rohan in next 14 days has consulted many doctors who gave several medications. However, things didn’t improve. Amma became aware of Rohan, as someone who is trying to make her remember something.

Beyond Birth

On the 15^th day Rohan felt asleep, sobbing in a corner of his house, the last thought he remembered was, Chiku was blinking his eyes and making some hand gestures.  Being a humble squirrel, Rohan didn’t give much attention, he dozed off.

Lo! He saw he was sitting on a land, the entire area surrounding him was filled with golden light, there was so much of unconditional love that he could feel in his heart and Chiku was standing in front of him. He started to speak with Rohan in human language – ‘Rohan wake up, if not today maybe it will be too late, Amma needs you.’

Rohan said- ‘Chiku, please help me understand this!’

‘If you understand the concept of re-births, your Amma has been with you from the last three births.’ Chiku continued, ‘Once she was a mama bear who used to bring honey from honey comb for feeding you, and in this process, she died of severe bee-stings, you remained oblivious.’

‘She was a mother deer, next birth, you were her fawn. To protect you once from hunters, she took their arrow.’

‘In her last birth she was a mother sparrow, you were her only chick, she used to love you unconditionally and one day you flew off leaving her lonely forever.’

‘This time, her soul has been tired enough of letting you go multiple times, without getting the acknowledgement of love she waited for so many births.’

‘Her mind has started erasing incidents.’

Rohan opened his eyes, wiped away his tears, got up and went to his Amma. He touched both her cheeks and smilingly closed his eyes.

Amma said, ‘Rohan!’

And this was the time when Rohan held his mother’s hand and said, ‘Amma come with me.’

He wanted to take her to the same land of golden light ,where only unconditional love is there.

Amma started going with Rohan towards the main door, but she turned around suddenly and said ‘But… Chiku is all alone.’

Rohan quipped, ‘Chiku has already reached there, he is waiting for you and me to join him!’
