Abhay Daan

” Daan you be the protector”, Abhay whispered.

Little Daan opened his eyes, he had fallen asleep. The night was cold and tired. His eyes were moist with tears.

Daan was looking at his father’s photo, he was hiding his face under his paws. Daan is an eight-month-old baby Labrador.

Abhay went towards the city to bring some gifts for his wife Barkha, as Barkha was about to become mother!

Abhay was the sarpanch of a small village in Rajasthan, and had a deep sense of justice and mercy. The villagers knew Abhay as a man of principle and truth.

Barkha was noble like Abhay, she was very simple and full of compassion and love.

Barkha had found a son in little Daan. And Daan loved his mother unconditionally! Daan, like any other human kid used to accompany Abhay, wherever he went. 

Barkha whole heartedly helped Abhay in his daily selfless services which he offered to the villagers. He used to donate funds for schools, small hospitals and sometimes for poor man’s daughter’s marriage. Abhay being aided by a noble wife continued with his noble tasks.

Abhay lived with Barkha in a big haveli. Earlier Abhay had a wicked brother who had killed an old villager.

When Darogababu from the nearest police station came, Abhay and Barkha vouched for the truth, and Abhay’s brother was arrested.

Abhay had funded in building a water well and once when Barkha was peeping into the well, suddenly Daan started barking loudly and Barkha got distracted, She was just saved from the brother of Abhay, who tried to push Barkha into the well.

Yes, Abhay’s brother had escaped from the prison, and as Daan kept barking loudly all the villagers came there running, but the brother ran away from there.

Little Daan was fearless like his father Abhay. He used to love good people and never took a backfoot in biting someone with evil intentions.

He was Abhay’s Daan. And the villagers called them together- “Abhay Daan’’.

Daan was sitting today with moist eyes as his father Abhay has died meeting a truck accident while going to the city and police suspected foul play.

Barkha was shattered to the core unable to move, she had stopped eating properly.

She was poignantly remembering people calling Abhay and Daan together as- ‘Abhay Daan-Protection by the Fearless.’

Barkha lovingly touched Daan’s face and said – “Daan can you still protect us!”

Daan woofed and closed his moist eyes.

It was a cold night and Daan again heard – ‘A big day tomorrow Daan, Save your mother!’

Next day wives of villagers come together and arranged a small Baby-Shower for Barkha.

Suddenly, Daan noticed Abhay’s prison escaped brother has sneaked inside their kitchen and was mixing something in Barkha’s prasad, which the priest has kept separately only for Barkha, after completion of baby shower’s religious ceremony.

Daan saw Abhay standing at the kitchen’s main door, helplessly looking at Daan!

Daan understood what he needed to do. He started jumping and running to and fro near the big burning utensils, pushing Abhay’s brother into the flames.

The flames spread across the kitchen and all the village women came running inside.

A small moment slipped…

And now Daan found himself in Abhay’s arms! Daan rested his head on Abhay’s chest and together they saw Barkha praying, her eyes were closed –

‘Hey Ishwar, humesha Abhay Daan Dena.’
